Q. What’s a “B.Mus.”?
A. It’s a Bachelor of Music degree. I earned my degree in Piano Pedagogy, with Honors, at the University of Texas at Austin. During that time I played both on keyboard and double bass in symphony orchestras, and played chamber music concerts with students of cellist, George Neikrug.
.
Q. Tell me something about your work as a musician.
A. I played in symphony orchestras in Texas and Massachusetts. I also accompanied choruses, taught hundreds of piano students, both privately and at The Music School at Rivers, (Weston, MA) and served as church organist/pianist for eight years, in South Acton, MA. These days I teach a small number of delightful, ardent, adult piano students and direct a choir at the Unitarian Fellowship of Peterborough. I have been Musical Director and Pianist for musicals at the Peterborough Theatre Guild(2005, 2006). I am lead pianist for the Peterborough English Country Dancers.
.
Q. What was special about your post graduate studies?
A. Leonard Shure was a brilliant musician, trained in the European tradition. Through Mr. Shure, I trace myself as a 6th generation musical descendent of Beethoven. John Buttrick introduced me to John Diamond, MD, and Dr. Diamond’s “Behavioral Kinesiology”.
.
Q. How did you get into Brain Gym ?
A. I studied Behavioral Kinesiology for five years. In 1989 I was thrilled to hear about a similar discipline: “Educational Kinesiology”. I began studying basic “Edu-K” as soon as I could. “Basic Edu-K” is Brain Gym.
.
Q. Why did you focus on Brain Gym?
A. Brain Gym is a great fit for me. It is both a great stand-alone discipline, and a support tool that I weave into my music coaching. Brain Gym empowers people to “get unstuck” and develop their talents. As a musician, I am passionate about helping people learn and perform at their best, in every walk of life.
.
Q. Tell me about your Brain Gym work.
A. I have been teaching Brain Gym classes and working with individual clients since 1990. I teach individuals who seek self-help strategies, parents and teachers who want to help children, business people who want to achieve more with less stress, and seniors who want to stay healthy and vital.
.
Q. And what about Touch for Health?
A. One “ancestor” of Brain Gym is Touch for Health. I consider mastery of basic Touch for Health a must before students pursue advanced Brain Gym studies. I enjoy teaching Touch for Health to my Brain Gym students and others.
.
Q. Where are you from?
A. I grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, and lived in many of the surrounding suburbs northwest of Boston. I have also lived in Ohio and Texas, and I currently reside in Peterborough, Ontario. I hold dual US-Canadian citizenship.
.
Q. Did you say you are also interested in nutrition?
A. Yes, I became a passionate lay student of nutrition in my 20′s. I was able to correct some of my own health challenges and thankfully have enjoyed good health throughout my life. As a teacher, I am firmly convinced that great brain function, learning and performance require excellent brain health. Wholesome foods and freedom from toxicity are fundamentals of any personal health program.
.
Q. Is there a common thread that runs through everything that you do?
A. I think being a human being is FASCINATING. My primary passion is pushing past my own boundaries and developing my talents. A close second is to share what I have learned and to help other people have more satisfying, fulfilling lives.
